Grand Bahama

Yesterday we got back after a fantastic week on Grand Bahama island. View some photos. It was very hot and humid and we were grateful for the daily thunderstorms and rain. We look like cooked lobsters now after being in the sun.
Apart from lounging around on beaches and in the pool at our resort, we tried to partake of the local activities. One day we joined a group of new-found friends on a tour to the hurricane-hit West End of the island and crammed onto a power boat for an exhilirating 9 mile ride out to a tiny deserted island. We spent the day there, lounging on the beach and snorkelling in the shallow, clear waters. We drank lots of Bahama Mama’s and had a lobster lunch out on the island. We also went for a jeep safari where we got to drive our own Jeep on a guided tour around parts of the island, including an off-road jaunt through the uninhabited forests of the island. On the way we got to see some caves and wonderful deserted beaches. For lunch we stopped at one of those beaches and had time for a refreshing dip in the ocean. We intended to go kayaking too, but never got around to it.
Tamara’s highlight of the week was when we took a UNEXSO (Underwater Explorers Society) boat trip out to their dolphin lagoon. There Tamara got to swim with dolphins which she remarked was an unforgetable experience. Since I can’t swim fully, I only got to pet and hug a dolphin in one of the shallow tanks.
Other than that we sampled lots of rum (of course!) and ate at as many local places as we could, trying the local foods like cracked conch and guava duff.
