The book moves on…

Progress continues on my novel. As of a couple of weeks ago it was moving on at about 1000-1500 words a day which is a lot for me. Now I have slowed down to an average of 500-700, mainly because I am not writing every day.

It is heartening to know that every time I sit down at the laptop, I not only get a good 1000+ words done, but I also continue to solidify the direction of the plot and the setting. I have solid notes about where I am going and what scenes will come up soon. I’m also formulating a mental list of revisions to be made in the second draft.

True to my discovery a couple of years ago, I work better if I do not edit as I go along, but simply “regurgitate” it onto paper and rewrite on the next draft. That’s what the 2nd draft is for, right? If I were to get it down letter perfect the first time, then I’d submit the first draft, but no one’s first draft is good enough for print - with a few exceptions like Michael Moorcock, whom I have heard has been known to bang out an entire short novel in a long weekend in a single draft!

I’m actually looking forward to the 2nd draft as the time to rewrite, improve the atmosphere and characterisation, add and cut scenes, etc.

Onwards… :)
